So… what exactly am I supposed to write? I have started this blog to chronicle my running journey. I suppose that’s as a good a place as any to start.
In September 2018, after several failed attempts to get going on my own, I joined Redway Runners – Milton Keynes’ finest running group. Having never enjoyed running in my entire life, it was do or die. One final attempt. Alex, my better half, suggested we both sign up (something i’m sure she’s regretting ever suggesting as I set off on yet another “quick run”). Beginners group #85 on a Wednesday night was where it all began. A straight forward couch to 5k style group with around 50 of us.
It wasn’t long before I had achieved my main goal. I developed a love for running. I looked forward to the weekly sessions and pushing myself. Ever impatient, I did what all overly optimistic novice runners do and started looking beyond my Park Run graduation and towards bigger things. What bigger thing is there than a marathon (OK, I appreciate ultramarathons are bigger).
Before I had even graduated from my beginners course I had done it. Signed up to take part in the Berlin Marathon (September 2019) for Mind – The Mental Health Charity. I mean after all, other people run marathons. How hard could it possibly be?
Even this wasn’t enough to quench my new-found thirst for running. It wasn’t long before I had signed up to a couple of interim half marathons and a whole number of 10ks. It was going to be a busy 12 months!
Next step. Actually graduating from my beginners group and deciding on a plan of action. At the point, Alex made it very clear she had no intention of joining me as I stepped up the distance.
