Giving Back: My First Time Parkrun Volunteering

Giving Back: My First Time Parkrun Volunteering

Today was my first time Parkrun volunteering and what a fantastic experience it was. I ventured out in the chilly weather, donned a hi-viz jacket and did a stint as a barcode scanner. It really is as easy as it looks.

I chose my local Parkrun in Milton Keynes for volunteering. 1, because it’s easy and convenient and 2, because it’s safe. I wasn’t really sure what the process entailed so having the safety blanket of familiar surroundings seemed like a good idea.

How does it work?

After a quick email to the organisers or Milton Keynes Parkrun I was given my chosen slot as a barcode scanner and emailed some instructions. Essentially turn up at 8:30 and all will be explained. In all honesty (I’m always early for everything) 8:30 isn’t any earlier that I get there for Parkrun normally. After a quick “how-to” by another volunteering, I was ready to go. It really is as simple as it looks to scan a barcode.

Was lovely to see so many familiar faces and it’s a great feeling to know that I have done my tiny bit to help with such a fantastic weekly event.

It’s also a great opportunity to share in people’s victories. Listening to people talk about PBs and their first time really can’t help but bring a smile to your face.

If you haven’t ever volunteered at Parkrun and you find your self at a loose end one Saturday morning, make sure you head done and give a hand. It really is appreciated.
